Paxil is an antidepressant drug that has been under a lot of critical target ever since an FDA warning was issued in December 2003. According to the Paxil site, Paxil is well established in treating depression after nearly ten years and over 100 million patient treatments.
Depression is a common condition affecting approximately 16 million people in the United States in any given year.(12) The symptoms of depression can be triggered or worsened by life's difficulties.(1) The key symptoms include a sad, anxious or empty mood lasting for two weeks or more and/or loss of interest or pleasure in most activities you once enjoyed.
October 2003, the FDA notified healthcare professionals of reports of the occurrence of suicidality (both suicidal ideation and suicide attempts) in clinical trials for various antidepressant drugs in pediatric patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
PAXIL SIDE EFFECTS
Paxil may cause side effects, which are usually mild to moderate and may fade or disappear completely over time. A common side effect of Paxil is nausea, which may be lessened by taking it with food. Other side effects may include injury, infection, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, sleepiness, dizziness, yawning, sweating, abnormal vision, and sexual side effects. If you should experience any side effects, be sure to report them to your healthcare provider as soon as possible and follow his/her advice.
SSRIs, including Paxil, can cause a condition called akathisia (severe inner restlessness) that in turn is associated with suicidality. It has been proven that patients with major depressive disorder, both adult and pediatric, may experience worsening of their depression and/or the emergence of suicidal ideation and behavior (suicidality), whether or not they are taking antidepressant medications.
In the summer of 2003, British regulators issued a warning to doctors to avoid prescribing Paxil to children due to the new data linking the antidepressant to suicide attempts.
PAXIL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT
A Wyoming jury has awarded $6.4 million to the family of a man who killed three relatives and himself after taking the antidepressant Paxil. Though many lawsuits have claimed that antidepressants in the same class of drugs, which includes Prozac and Zoloft, have caused suicidal or violent behavior, this is the first case a plaintiff has won, lawyers in the case said
Paxil lawsuit claims pertaining to children being prescribed Paxil (Paroxetine), and the dangerous withdrawal symptoms of Paxil and other personal injury claims that may be linked to the child’s use of Paxil. GlaxoSmithKline liability is based on glaxoSmithKline (the manufacturer of Paxil) releasing and marketing Paxil, a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI), for off-label uses, withholding important information on its effect on children and its dangerous withdrawal symptoms
